Before the lesson, I create several objects from the cubes to use as examples. For the first example, I often make a desk or a chair—a simple object that the students can easily identify. I place a container of linking cubes on each table and allow the children a little free building time with the cubes to satisfy their curiosity. While the children are building, I pass out a note card to each child.
When we ask our students to investigate patterns of odd and even numbers, we are asking them to think beyond the fact that a number is simply odd or even. When we calculate sums and ask children to investigate the addends, we are asking our students to make generalizations about properties of whole numbers. When children report that an odd number plus an odd number equals an even number, we can help them better articulate their thinking by asking them to give numerical examples that support their thinking, such as 3 ϩ 5 ϭ 8 or 5 ϩ 5 ϭ 10.
